Education

B.S. Manufacturing Systems Engineering - GMI/Kettering University; M.S. Manufacturing Management - GMI/Kettering University; A.A.S. Skilled Trades, Industrial Electrician - Delta College; Post Baccalaureate Degree, Paralegal Studies - Lansing Community College

Experience

I have worked for over 10 years with both private clients and in the Tutoring Department at Lansing Community College. I have tutored students as young as 4th grade, up to adults returning to school to finish their degrees. In private one-on-one sessions and group sessions; using student materials or material developed and supplied by me; in students' homes, libraries, classrooms - wherever is convenient and comfortable for the student. I come to the student! With my diverse educational and work background, I can offer unique perspectives to motivate the student. Beyond my engineering degree, I have a Master's degree in Manufacturing Management. I worked as an engineer and supervisor in a factory setting. Later, I revamped my career by taking an apprenticeship as an Industrial Electrician. I completed a degree for the skilled trades and worked in the factory as an electrician. I worked as a professional tutor at a community college where I earned my Master Level Tutor certification through the College Reading and Learning Association. At that time, I also completed a degree in Paralegal Studies and worked in a law office. Each of these experiences gives me a base to demonstrate where book studies can be used in a career environment. "Why do I have to learn this?" "Where will I every use this?" "I HATE math!!" Questions and statements that are commonly used by students when they are challenged by math and science. When I work with students, I always find a way to make the material relevant, non-scary, and achievable. I structure my sessions to help the student at his/her current level, to find the place where the disconnect has happened, and to work in steps that are specific to the student's needs. My students and parents regularly comment that "no one has ever been able to explain the material so simply" and "you don't talk over our heads." I love the challenge of finding just the right way to see the 'light bulb' come on when the student makes the connection!
